Optical Flats

Optical Flats

Manufactured using BK-7 grade of optical glass or fused quartz of 0.06 or 0.13 micron, our range of optical flats is used for inspection of gauge blocks, mechanical seals, pump valves, auto parts, prisms, filters, mirrors and windows. The diameters of the raw material range from 25mm to 100mm. These optical flats are used to measure the flatness of unknown surfaces as a reference by means of property of interference.

The principle of operation of these flats is given below:
  • Optical flats on a test surface form air wedges where the surfaces do not touch
  • Thickness of the air wedge changes that shows the direction and shape of the interference bands
  • This change will make light and dark bands visible under monochromatic light
  • These bands are interference fringes whose shape gives off a visual representation of the flatness of the test surface.
The details and specifications of these flats are given below
  • Measured for accuracy through the fractions of a reference wavelength
  • Surface accuracy derived from the amount of curve and spacing between the interference fringes
  • Straight and parallel interference fringes refers that the tested surface has a flatness more than or equal to the reference surface
  • An uneven interference pattern with optical flats indicates that the flatness of the test surface is less than that of the reference surface.

Optical Parallel

Optical Parallel

Widely used for checking the flatness and parallelism of micrometer anvils, our optical parallels are specially designed to observe light wave interference fringes. These parallels use monochromatic light sources for observing fringes/light bands.

Manufactured in accordance to the standards of NPL (National Physical Laboratory) and specifications of MOY/SCMI/54, these parallels hold the following features and specifications:
  • Thickness of the four Optical Parallel appropriate for every quarter turn of the micrometer screw
  • One of the parallel is used for inspection of parallelism
  • Parallelism between the Anvil and the Micrometer screw measured by the number of light bands at each of the four positions of the micrometer screw.
